Бассейн Огайо - один из важнейших промышленных и сельскохозяйственных районов страны. Судоходна по всему течению. На р. Огайо расположены города Питсбург [ Pittsburgh], Цинциннати [ Cincinnati], Луисвилл [ Louisville], Эвансвилл [ Evansville] и др. Река впервые исследована экспедицией Ласалля [ La Salle, Robert Cavelier, Sieur de, Rene R.] в 1699. В колониальный период имела стратегическое значение для Англии и Франции.
